How Angels began...
The Angels Among Us 5K and Family Fun Walk, originally known as the Duke Forest 5K, originated as a hastily sketched out plan on the back of a napkin during a lunch break. Two Duke employees had each lost a family member from a brain tumor and wanted to make a difference. Both family members had received treatment at Duke, so they chose to direct their efforts to The Duke Brain Tumor Program. The first event in 1994 hosted 200 people and raised a total of $27,000.
The original dream stated that all funds raised would go to research in finding a cure for brain tumors; seventeen years later that dream still stands true!
What Angels has become...
ANGELS AMONG US is a celebration of life, strength, courage and commitment. It has become a national event, with thousands coming from all across the country to volunteer, participate, and make a difference. The 2010 event was host to over 4500 people and raised $1,636,530!
The success of Angels Among Us has continued to grow each year with the help of many committed volunteers, Duke Staff, and the Angel teams made up of families and friends of those who have had brain or spinal tumors.
The 2010 event was held on Saturday, April 24th, on the campus of the Duke University Medical Center at the corner of Erwin Road and Flowers Drive. The day included a certified 5K run through the Duke campus, and a family walk through the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens. There was entertainment, childrens activities & prizes, local mascots and clowns, medals for top fundraising children, awards to the top ten fundraising teams, a silent auction, lunch provided by generous sponsors, t-shirts for all registered participants and much, much more. A great time was had by all, while giving hope to our brain tumor patients and their families.
Where Angels is going...
All proceeds continue to go directly towards research and clinical trials of brain and spinal tumors at The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke. The money is used to fund crucial initiatives that address the greatest needs and have the most impact on the lives of all brain tumor patients, support new and innovative research and treatments, assist with the recruitment of the most outstanding research staff and technical personnel, and purchase essential equipment and supplies. “At Duke, There is Hope” for all patients.
